Snoring. The sound alone is enough to annoy every person in your home, but did you know that snoring could be a sign of a serious health condition called sleep apnea? Not all snorers have this condition, but if you notice any of these other signs, you should give Overmeyer Family Dental a call. Signs of sleep apnea include:
- Loud, obtrusive snoring
- Waking up gasping for breath during the night
- Your partner noticing that you stop breathing while sleeping
- Dry, sore throat when you awake
- Excessive tiredness, irritability
Types of Sleep Apnea
Two types of sleep apnea will cause very similar symptoms, but the majority of sleep apnea cases are caused by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA means that there is a literal obstruction in your breathing passages when you sleep. This could be due to the size or resting position of your tongue, the thickness of your throat, or your weight.
Central sleep apnea (CSA) is much more rare, but it is a much more serious condition. CSA is caused by miscommunication between the brain and the rest of your body. In other words, your brain stops telling your body to breathe, which forces your body to wake up.
Without treatment, both OSA and CSA can be deadly. It is possible that a sleep apnea episode could lead to death, but it is more likely that the side effects would cause the problem. Sleep apnea increases your risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, diabetes, depression, and fatigue-related vehicle accidents.
What Is the Solution for Sleep Apnea?
At Overmeyer Family Dental, we can help you get back to a healthy sleep schedule with our comfortable, effective treatment options. You see, many patients go to their doctor and are handed a CPAP machine. While effective, the CPAP has an extremely low compliance rate. In other words, patients don’t want to wear their CPAP!
The mask itself can be uncomfortable, the machine noisy, and often the settings are uncomfortably incorrect. It’s difficult to get things just right, so many patients choose not to wear this life-saving item.
Dr. Overmeyer has a solution in oral appliance therapy (OAT). With OAT, we can custom create a sleep apnea device that will fit in your mouth much like a mouthguard. The appliance can be made to do many different things. Some appliances shift your jaw forward to open the airway while others adjust the position of your tongue.
Any of our OAT options will be very comfortable, and you’ll find that they are highly effective!
