Waking up with pain in your jaw every day is exhausting. You may go to bed dreading the morning, deal with the pain all day long, or have suffered other effects of pain originating in front of your ears. All of these kinds of pains could indicate a problem in your temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. Collectively called TMJ disorders, or TMD, these conditions can be incredibly painful!
We offer easy, no-hassle treatment for TMD at Overmeyer Family Dental, but that’s not the entirety of treating TMD. Knowing what’s true about this common condition is important to treating it as well. There is plenty bad information out there, and we want to help make it clear.
TMD Is Just Caused By Grinding Your Teeth
While grinding and clenching, also called bruxism, is a common cause of TMD it’s not the only one by a long shot. Other conditions that cause TMJ pain include arthritis, a slipped cartilage disk in your jaw joint, malocclusion (a bad bite), and even stress.
TMD itself is an inflammation or irritation in the jaw joint that causes pain when you chew, speak, or use your jaw in any way. The variety of causes can display different symptoms but there’s always one thing they have in common: they hurt! Luckily we can treat the symptoms of TMD and in many cases treat the cause as well.
A TMJ Headache Is Just A Migraine With A Different Name
TMD can cause serious head pain that goes far beyond the jaw and face. Intense migraine-like headaches are somewhat common for TMD sufferers but that doesn’t mean that they’re the same thing as a migraine.
Migraines are typically considered to originate in the head, whereas TMD pain is due to a problem in your jaw, neck, or face. There are several distinct differences between the two despite similar symptoms. If you are suffering from migraines that include facial pain or difficulty chewing you should definitely plan on seeing us at our Orlando office!
Treatments For TMD Are Just Symptom Managers
This can be true, but in many cases we can completely treat TMD and eliminate the root cause of your pain. If you have a bad bite we can suggest orthodontic treatments, stress can be managed through lifestyle changes or therapy, and muscles that don’t act appropriately can be retrained to make your bite pain-free.
Some conditions, such as nighttime bruxism, are harder to completely cure. For those cases we recommend the use of oral appliances that cushion the jaw and prevent excess tension and force on the muscles and joints. Most every patient suffering from TMD can benefit from a nightguard, but for many people it’s just a temporary step on the road to a permanent solution.
Surgery Is The Only Real Solution
This is completely untrue! Of course surgery may be the best option for some patients but those who need it are few and far between. In reality the vast majority of patients will find relief through the use of oral appliances or other simple treatments.
Patients who need surgical treatment are generally those who have suffered from an injury, slipped disc in the jaw, or other serious problem that can’t be resolved through alternative treatments. We don’t see very many people like this at Overmeyer Family Dental. We’re sure you’ll find relief with one of our simple and effective treatments.
