There is a small treatment that can help you prevent tooth decay and even restore some enamel: fluoride. Our Orlando FL dental office, Overmeyer Family Dental, has been using fluoride every day in our office for decades. We’ve always had the science to back up the use of fluoride, but sometimes we need to remind patients.
And now a recent study from the International & American Associations for Dental Research found that induction of fluoride into much of the drinking supply has greatly reduced the number of cavities across the country. This is music to a dentist’s ears, because we’d love nothing more than to do as little restorative dentistry as possible.
Here are some highlights of the article regarding fluoride:
- Children and young adults with access to fluoridated drinking water were at a decreased risk of dental cavities.
- Counties with three-fourths of the population with fluoridated water access had a reduction in cavities by about 30 percent.
- The benefits of fluoride is most pronounced for children between the ages of 2 and 8.
- Fluoride reduces the risk of cavities and even restores weakened enamel.
We dentists have been advocating for the use of fluoride for decades. Additionally, many cities and municipalities around the country have been using fluoride. In Florida, about 78 percent of the population has access to fluoridated drinking water. We’d like to see that number even higher, but even if you do have access to fluoride, there are still a ways a dentist can prevent future dental problems
Preventive Treatments at Overmeyer Family Dental
Even if you have access to fluoridated drinking water, it’s best to use fluoride-base toothpastes and to undergo fluoride treatments at the dentist. We offer fluoride treatments and fluoride varnish during your cleanings and exams. The fluoride varnish is rendered quickly — it only takes about one minute of your time.
We recommended that children and adults undergo special fluoride treatment during each of their dental visits — or at least once a year. Whenever you’re away from the dental office, it’s best to use fluoride-based toothpastes and mouthwashes with fluoride. In addition to fluoride treatments, we can also offer your children preventive dental sealants. These dental sealants are placed on the biting surface of teeth and literally locked out the decay. The dental sealants are easily placed, we don’t need to numb the area, and they can last for years.
For active children and adults, we recommend athletic mouthguards. Our mouthguards are customized and fit perfectly over the teeth. A custom mouthguard will protect the teeth better than generic boil-and-bite mouthguards that you can get from the drugstore or sporting goods store. We can also design mouthguards for patients who clench or grinding their teeth at night.
