Here at Overmeyer Family Dental, we are dedicated to helping patients maintain healthy, beautiful smiles for life! That means helping children build great oral health habits. If you are a parent, you want your child to have the healthiest smile possible … and we can help! Here are six great tips to get your child interesting in their dental health:
#1: Start Young
The most important thing you can do to help set your child up for success when it comes to dental hygiene is to start them off young! It is important to start talking to your child about great dental health care as soon as they have teeth to take care of! By helping your child understand how and why to take care of their smile from a very young age, you are ensuring that they have respect for dental care for many years to come.
#2: Brush With Them!
You are the best role model you can provide for your child! Show them what great dental health looks like by brushing and flossing with them. This is a great bonding time for your child and a fantastic teaching moment for you. You can show them how to brush and floss with the proper technique. If you need to be reminded of recommend brushing and flossing techniques, please contact our office. We would be happy to assist you.
#3: Buy Them A Cool Brush
Another great way to help your child get involved with their dental health is by finding them hygiene products that they love. There are lots of cool tooth brush options for kids, as well as a variety of flavors of toothpaste. You could even take your child with you to the store to pick these things out! By allowing your child to choose their own cool kids’ toothbrush and toothpaste, you are helping them get excited about taking care of their smile.
#4: Use A Fun App
If you child still is not interested in taking care of their smile even after investing in a new brush and toothpaste, it may be time to whip out the phone apps! All four of these apps are available for Android and iPhone. Pick one of these fun dental programs to entertain your child and encourage them to brush regularly.
Dental DJ – Plays music from your phone or the app to help time and encourage brushing.
Disney Magic Timer – Uses Disney characters to encourage and entertain while brushing and flossing.
Chopper Chums – Guides your child through the process of brushing, flossing, and rinsing while earning points that they can use to feed their characters.
#5: Reward Good Hygiene Habits
While we do not recommend bribing your child, it may be a great idea to reward good behavior! Give them an incentive to take care of their smile. This could be as simple as allowing them to stay up an extra 30 minutes at night when they brush and floss their teeth, or allowing extra TV time. Rewarding good dental hygiene behavior is a great way to build long-term habits.
#6: Schedule Regular Dental Checkups
While all of these things can help get your child interested in home hygiene, one of the best things you can do for your child’s dental health is to bring them to the dentist! By visiting the dentist when they are young, you are helping your child avoid dental anxiety and to build great long-term dental health habits. We can fully examine your child and catch any small problem that may pop up … before it turns into a larger, more unpleasant issue. We can also give advice on nutrition, hygiene techniques, and more. We recommend booking a checkup visit for every member of your family at least every six months.
