Flushing Fluoride Rumors
If you’ve been on the internet for any length of time you’ve probably come across some pretty amazing conspiracy theories. There are a lot of them out there and most are pretty far out in left field. One we get asked about at Overmeyer Family Dental frequently is the truth to rumors about fluoride danger. Fluoride is a pretty common part of dental health care and we use it all the time!
Some of our patients just know what to believe about fluoride! Where does it come from, what can it do, whether it’s poisonous – these are all things that are hard to get a straight answer to on the internet! We want to help clear the air about fluoride. After all, who better to trust about its safety than someone who knows fluoride in and out?
Does Fluoride Cause Cancer?
Since water fluoridation began 70 years ago there have been numerous studies run to determine if fluoride increased cancer risks. Studies of many different types of cancer have been performed, many of which focused on bone cancer. Fluoride is naturally attracted to bone (one of the reasons it helps your teeth) and so if there would be any clear cancer link it would be found there!
Unfortunately for this myth there hasn’t been any link between fluoride and cancer discovered. Many highly skilled researchers have spent a lot of time trying to be absolutely sure that there isn’t a link, and you can trust them when almost a century of work has shown that there isn’t.
Is Fluoride In Our Water Too Expensive?
Water fluoridation has often been attacked for being too expensive. The burden has been put on taxpayers, proponents argue, which isn’t fair! The numbers speak to quite the opposite conclusion, however!
In a town of 20,000 or more people the average fluoridation costs per household are around 50 cents. Even in smaller communities the “higher cost” is still less than a dollar! And guess what? For every dollar spent fluoridating water about $38 in dental care costs are saved. That’s quite a return on an investment!
A Lot Of Countries In Europe Rejected Water Fluoridation!
That’s true, but there are a lot of reasons why european countries have decided against fluoridation! In some nations, particularly mountainous ones, water fluoridation can be difficult! Water systems are old or poorly designed or there are simply not large enough networks to make it worth the cost!
People who argue that europe has it right also forget to mention one very important fact: those countries still supplement their fluoride in other products! Eastern europe has taken to fluoridating their milk and many other countries have added it to their salt. So those people are still getting their fluoride, just not from the water!
Hasn’t Fluoride Been Linked To Lower IQ Scores?
No one wants to think about their child being harmed in such a way. Thankfully the few studies that have claimed a link between fluoride and lower IQ scores were poorly researched, made bad conclusions, and were performed in other parts of the world where fluoride is highly concentrated!
The studies were mainly done in China and Mexico, where fluoride naturally occurs in water at levels two to three times greater than what we add to ours. That means the studies don’t even connect to our situation! The results were also not connected to the research and many other possible causes were completely ignored in favor of targeting fluoride as the culprit!
Fluoride Is A Safe Bet!
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is perfectly safe. In extremely high doses it can be dangerous but those levels are really high! To even get close to fluoride poisoning an adult would have to drink 10 liters of water in a day. The recommended water intake is only three per day. 10 liters is a LOT of water!
By consuming fluoride in your drinking water, cooking, toothpaste, and other foods you’re doing your teeth and bones a favor. Fluoride has been overwhelmingly successful at preventing tooth decay and has made our nation’s teeth much less prone to cavities!
