If you’ve ever walked into the dentist fear-free you’re one of the lucky ones. There are a lot of patients that we see at Overmeyer Family Dental who have a hard time even picking up the phone to call us for an appointment. We understand the fear they feel, and we truly want to help: dental care is essential to a healthy life!
Maybe you’re the kind of person who finds themselves terrified at the idea of dentistry. You probably still realize how important good care is, but maybe you only go as far as reading articles about dental fear. We want to help you find the relief you need so you can get the care we provide. And we want to do it without the need for dental sedation!
What Is Dental Phobia?
It’s complicated. Think about all the things you’re scared of: can you tell where each and every one of those fears come from? Maybe it was a past experience. Or it could have been something you saw on TV or read in a book. It could also just be from something someone told you. To bottom line is that there are a lot of reasons people are scared, and just as many patients who don’t know why.
Understanding your fear of dentistry starts not by identifying the event that caused the fear, it starts with realizing where that fear lives: in your head.
Is Your Fear Reasonable?
It’s a tough question to ask yourself: does my fear have merit? Of course it does – you wouldn’t be scared over nothing, would you? In many cases we unconsciously endures our own fears without ever having real proof. This common problem, called distorted thinking, is one of the key parts of dental phobias. We assume that since we had one bad experience, heard one bad story, or saw something frightening in a movie that each and every experience we have is going to be bad!
When you look at it that way it seems kind of silly, doesn’t it? It should! This is the point where you realize something important about your fear: it’s taken over your mind and made you think with nothing but the primal urge to run away from pain!
So you know that your fear is just an expectation you’ve built up in your head: so what? It’s still frightening, isn’t it? Where’s the proof that dental care isn’t frightening and painful? While our patients can speak to our record of providing great, comfortable care you might not believe them!
Part of knowing that your expectations for painful dentistry aren’t necessarily how things really are is learning what to expect. Each and every patients that comes to our Orlando office has a chance to ask any questions they want. We believe that part of good dental care is understanding what’s going on from start to finish, and we want you to understand that too!
We’ll also review all the new technology we have access to. Dental care has changed a lot over the years, making fast, painless, easy care more available than ever. We can do all sorts of things with minimally-invasive care that were complicated and painful even 15 years ago!
Banishing Distorted Thinking
Treating dental anxiety can be a long, hard road. We don’t want to make it sound too easy in this blog post: it definitely isn’t. Some patients are able to learn how to counter their own bad thinking and simply move one, while others are fighting the fear for months.
We simply ask that you give us a chance to show you how different great dental care can be. Our entire team has dedicated themselves to providing great dental care that is compassionate, caring, comfortable, and effective.
Realize that your dental fears exist inside you. They’re expectations of reality that don’t necessarily reflect it. Whether you had a bad experience in the past, are scared from stories, or saw something unpleasant in a movie, those experiences aren’t the reality of your current dental care situation. Bundle that fear up and let it go – we’ll help!
