Learn About Your New Orlando Dentist
What made me get into dentistry is growing up, I liked to do things with my hands. I liked sciences in school. I wanted to get into something that was more medically related.
The dentists in my hometown had a nice lifestyle, and it seemed like a nice, pleasant profession. It wasn't a live or die type thing. And basically all we're doing is creating smiles and making it so people can eat.
The most rewarding part of dentistry again is to make people healthy, as far as their oral health is concerned, and to make them eat better, to make them smile better, and to make them look better.
I started out at the Ohio State University, got my undergrad degree in three years, and I was a microbiology major. Then I proceeded into dental school directly, and by that time, it was three years, all year round.
I completed my dental degree in 1980. After that I went into a general practice residency for a year, where we studied all phases of dentistry in a hospital setting.
Along with that, also some medical specialties in the practice of medicine, surgery, radiology, anesthesiology. Basically, we enhanced what I learned in dental school to make me a more competent dentist. Every year we go to many continuing education courses, and dentistry being a highly evolving practice, basically you got to keep up with your continuing education to keep up with the times, and basically that helps the patient and that we stay current with our dental treatment.
Dr. Thomas Overmeyer was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and lived there until age 6. His family moved to Defiance, Ohio, a small town just south of Toledo, and he lived there until graduating from high school in 1974. He attended Ohio State University and graduated cum laude in three years with a Bachelor of Science in microbiology. The same year, he was accepted to dental school at The Ohio State University and graduated with honors three years later in 1980.
Following graduation, Dr. Tom attended a prestigious one-year general practice residency program at the College of Medicine and Life Sciences at Toledo, where he did extensive study in many areas of general dentistry. Dr. Tom then had the desire to leave the cold north and head to Orlando, Florida. He landed in Orlando in September 1981 and began his career as an associate dentist with a local Spanish-speaking practitioner, Dr. Antonio Sanchez. Ninety percent of his patients only spoke Spanish, and he performed work with a bilingual assistant.
Seven months later, Dr. Tom purchased the practice of a dentist who was returning to specialty school. He officially took ownership in June 1982. Dr. Tom believed that it was the natural thing to do to progress from dental school to being an associate and then to being a practice owner. Dr. Tom decided to move to their current location at 3221 S. Conway Rd., where he has been practicing since February 1984.
Over the past 30 years, Dr. Tom has taken numerous continuing education courses and enjoys the many facets of dental treatment. He loves meeting and helping his many patients and creating awesome smiles that make them feel proud.
